Why Choose Blackout Curtains for Hotels?

Hotels are known as places for rest, rejuvenation, and relaxation. That’s what they’re there for. So, what happens when the hotel doesn’t offer the right atmosphere or furnishings so you can rest well? They get a negative review. Blackout curtains are ideal for use in hotels since they offer a range of advantages that enable people to get a good nights’ sleep.

In this guide, we’ll explain what blackout curtains are, the science behind them, and how hotels can benefit from using blackout curtains in their rooms.

What are Blackout Curtains?

The main purpose of blackout curtains is to restrict or block the amount of light that can enter a room. Many blackout curtains are made from thick materials, and used as standalone blackout curtains that work alone to protect the room from light pollution. Alternatively, they can be an ordinary curtain fabric, paired with a special blackout lining that means no light can filter through the curtains when closed.

What are Blackout Curtains Made of?

There’s a bit of science behind how blackout curtains work. Let’s explain. Blackout curtains are usually made of polyester or polyester and cotton blends. They are tightly woven together so there are no spaces in the textile through which light can filter into the room. Blackout curtains can be made from any fabric, then paired with a blackout lining. They can also be backed with blackout treatments such as acrylic blackout coatings that ensure complete light exclusion.

Blackout curtain lining is different to the non-lined blackout curtains, as the lining must be enough to make the top layer fabric blackout. Our Outblack FR lining is an example. The 100% cotton lining has a three-pass blackout coating. This means there is a layer of black foam sandwiched between two layers of white foam on the back of the lining. The black is there for blackout purposes, but doesn’t affect the look of the top layer fabric as the white foam layers hide it from view.

These linings can be versatile and also have a resulting visual effect on the curtains they are lining. Outblack is also available in Outblack Silk FR, a premium quality blackout lining with a soft handle. This lining adds extra body to lightweight face fabrics, resulting in an improved drapery look.

Another lining is our Drapewell FR, another three-pass blackout coating. Both of these linings are 100% blackout, with light protection and thermal properties – perfect for hotels, without impacting the outer view of the curtain style.

What are the Benefits of Blackout Curtains for the Hotel Sector?

  • Light control properties

As the main purpose of blackout fabrics, light control is one leading benefit of blackout curtains for the hotel sector. This means customers can adjust the amount of light they want to enter the room for their own comfort.

  • Perfect nights’ sleep

Every hotel wants to offer their customers the perfect nights’ sleep. This just won’t happen if your room is polluted with light that can filter through the curtains. The Sleep Foundation states that light is the ‘most important external factor affecting sleep.’ We might find it bearable to sleep with the lights on, but this can affect out production of melatonin. It can also dysregulate our circadian rhythm, and therefore disrupt our sleep – leaving us feeling groggy and tired in the morning. This is exactly why blackout curtains are important for hotels.

  • Reduce noise pollution

Noise pollution often enters the room from outside when windows are not properly insulated from sound. Blackout curtains often go hand-in-hand with other qualities, including noise pollution protection.

  • Insulating

25% of the heat in a room can escape through windows. Blackout curtains and blackout linings are often thick enough to have insulating properties, as well as their blackout effects. This means each room is protected from the outside elements, as the summer heat and winter cold can’t penetrate the curtains and effect the temperature of the hotel room.

  • Cost-effective

As mentioned above, blackout curtains can regulate the temperature in hotel rooms, and protect from the seasonal elements. This has cost saving possibilities and allows hotels to save on heating costs.

  • Good reviews

Any hotel that doesn’t offer a good rest is subject to negative reviews – it’s failed its purpose as a hotel. Blackout curtains add that extra level of comfort so customers can enjoy their sleep in peace, increasing the possibility of good reviews. This brings repeat customers, as well as new ones via word of recommendation.

  • A variety of styles

The positive about blackout curtains is that they are available in a wide range of styles. The use of blackout linings means we don’t have to stick to thick blackout curtains – we can combine selections to match our own style. Blackout curtain designs can therefore suit any interior or branded applications for hotels. A popular idea is to select curtains for hotels in the signature colour that matches your hotel’s logo. This adds a subtle yet effective impact visible from either the interior or exterior of your hotel.
