Raw Japanese

Following on from our China Girl blog, the second trend we explore in our Global Traveller series is Raw Japanese.

 

Wabi Sabi has become synonymous with typical raw Japanese style and the epitome of simple living. It’s no secret the Japanese really do like their interiors super simple; a hymn to the imperfect characters of nature, tracing their origins back to the 15th century and an adverse reaction to the opulence and ornament of the Dynasty Imperials.

 

 

A definition is always a good place to start………

Wabi = anything simple and fresh

Sabi = the charm old things provide when they are weathered

 

“In traditional Japanese aesthetics, Wabi-sabi (侘寂) is a world view centred on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete”. It is a concept derived from the Buddhist teaching of the three marks of existence (三法印 sanbōin); specifically impermanence (無常 mujō), suffering (苦 ku) and emptiness or absence of self-nature (空 kū).

Characteristics of the wabi-sabi aesthetic include asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and appreciation of the ingenuous integrity of natural objects and processes.” (Source: Wikipedia)

 

 

Wabi Sabi can be easily transferred into calm interior living; think…..lack of ornament…..lots of natural daylight…..natural materials like linen, cotton and silk…..simple interiors and lack of fuss and ornament.

 

 

So, we see that there is beauty in the old and the natural, a flawed beauty that elevates imperfection.

A message to our customers #3

As we enter another week and continue to adjust to this 'new normal' way of life, I wanted to keep you informed of our current service levels:

 

  • Continued shipping, UK & international – we may need flexibility on dates of goods leaving our warehouse, as we are working with a skeleton team.
  • We are here to answer your calls and emails – our customer service team are working from home taking any enquiries and orders as usual.
  • We've had lots of enquiries from customers who are manufacturing PPE products to support the NHS and other healthcare environments – we are supplying fabrics for this purpose so please contact us for more information.
  • Sampling – we are only able to send out samples where it is urgent; these won't be sent out daily unfortunately.   • Our warehouse and home offices will be closing for Easter weekend - the last day of shipping will be this Thursday 9th April until we re-open on Tuesday 14th April. We wish you all a lovely safe Easter weekend.

A message to our customers #2

Things are changing day by day, minute by minute and we think it is important to keep you informed of our service levels during this time.

Following our update yesterday evening, it is clear that a large number of our customers are still able to keep working and many are making products for the NHS and Healthcare environments and continue to require fabric and other products. We want to reassure you:

 

  • Continued shipping, UK & international – we have made the decision based on feedback from customers, that we keep some staff available to deliver goods next week, commencing 30th March.
  • We may need flexibility on dates of goods leaving our warehouse, as we are working with a skeleton team.
  • We are here to answer your calls and emails – our customer service team are working at home taking any enquiries and orders as usual (we will confirm delivery dates).
  • We will do everything we can to support the Healthcare market, so please contact us to see how we can help you were product is needed.
  • If you require fabrics urgently to support you through this crisis, we are able to ship goods and will confirm delivery dates once we receive your order.
  • If you can’t get through, please email sales@edmundbell.com and we’ll call you back as soon as possible.

Our sister company Redwood TTM in Skelmersdale is continuing to manufacture medical equipment and mattresses for the NHS and Healthcare requirements at the request of the Government. Please let us know if they can help you with any medical products.
